Calathea peacock with dry leaf edge

It almost died last year (all the leaves turned yellow and fell) and only roots left, later some leaves started to grow again gradually (in august) without repotting. now some newer leaves seem to have problems I don’t know why and also it stopped growing new leave since several weeks.

  • Hello!

Oh no! I'm sorry that your calathea suddenly started to get yellow leaves again after finally starting to grow again.

Many things could cause a calathea's leaves to turn yellow, but the most common is probably due to uneven watering.

Despite being common houseplants, calatheas can actually be quite finicky. They first of all dislike water with limestone in it, which is why it's a good idea to let your water rest in a can overnight before watering your plant in it. That way, any excess of limestone will float to the bottom.

Overwatering is also a common problem. Calatheas do like to always have properly moist soil, but it should never get too wet or let your plant stand in water that gathers in the bottom of the pot. If you notice that you water your plant and the water doesn't get absorbed at the bottom within 10 minutes, it's probably too much water.

Underwatering is of course also an issue. As they prefer humid soil and air, they're quick to start drooping if it's too dry. If it goes on for too long, spots may appear.

Try then to be extra careful with your watering habits. Maybe repot your plant with some new soil (but not in a too-big pot! Calatheas like to live cramped!) and keep a closer eye on how dry the soil feels.

    Good luck!
