What plants can give som protection against windy outdoor places?

Hi. Im looking to plant something on my altan to provide wind protection. I will plant in a rectangle planter on wheels so I can move it around where needed. Can I get suggestions on what to plant.
The altan faces west and is very open, in summer there is many hours of direct sun and it can get very windy also.
Could I plant a type of Lagerhägg maybe?

  • Hello James!

    Thank you for the question!

In this case, I'd suggest not planting a lagerhägg (Prunus laurocerasus) as too much wind and sun will cause the plant a whole lot of stress and risks damaging the leaves.

Instead, here's some other shrubs that might work in more windy areas:
    • Vresros (Rosa rugosa)
    • Syren (Syringa vulgaris)
    • Måbär (Ribes alpinum)

Remember that plants in pots that also grow in sunny and windy climates run a high risk of drying out quickly. I'd suggest keeping an extra eye on the watering if this is the case.

Hope you find something that will do good in your gardens!

  • Thanks for the tips!

I have already got some syren and they seem to lose their leaves in winter,is it the same with the other 2 you suggested.
I prefer something that will remain dense during the whole year

  • Hello again!

An evergreen plant that can manage both very sunny and very windy areas... that's a tricky one!

From here on, I'd suggest some experimentation on what plants can manage the environment you have. Some plants, like hybrididegran (Taxus x media) can usually handle partly sunny places but have in some areas managed a little more sun.

I have my doubts about Tuja (Thuja occidentalis) and whether it would manage the wind, but that would also be a case of trial and error.

Other than that it can get a little tough to find a hardy plant for that kind of climate, that can also manage as a potted plant. But I hope that some of the plants suggested can manage the weather where you live!

    Good luck!
