Elstar apple hardiness, will they grow in zone 3?

hi Team, I have a question about  https://www.plantagen.se/apple-elstar-o23-cm-rod-541606.html . It is marked with growing zone 3. Will it grow in  Alunda ? From what I can tell it's on the edge of zone 3 and 4. Thanks!

  • Hello, Arthur!

If you live in zone 3, then an apple tree with the same hardiness should be okay, but if you live closer to zone 4 it could be better to find a tree with more hardiness as a precaution.

After all, a less hardy tree may survive a while if the weather is mild, but a hard year is all it take for the tree to get damaged. Better safe than sorry! :-)

However, it's good to keep in mind that hardiness zones can change very locally in smaller microclimates. Open or elevated areas can have a higher hardiness zone than a shielded area, which may have a lower one.

I'd suggest looking around your neighbourhood. This can give a good insight to what type of hardiness you will require if you're unsure - and maybe you can even check with others around you who have apple trees what hardiness they may have, as a clue to what your own tree may need!

Hope this answers your question and that you find a great tree for your garden!

  • Hi Jennie,

Thanks for the extensive response. It seems that this one might be a better option for zone 4: https://www.plantagen.se/apple-folke-e-a2-hojd-150-200-cm-rod-532933.html.

Do I understand correctly that I can order it starting March? And do you deliver in Alunda?

Finally do I need two get two trees in other for them to be able to pollinate? Or do I need a different type for the pollination?

    Kind regards,
    Arthur

  • Hello again!

Yes, Folke has grown quite a lot in popularity - and E-marked plants are also specifically grown for swedish climates and for being both long-lived and resistant to many diseases. The apples of Folke can also be stored for quite some time and has a long shelf-life!

When it comes to pollination, it depens. Yes, apples need a compatible tree to grow fruit (Folke is pollinated by these, to name a few: Filippa, Ingrid Marie, James Grieve and Signe Tillisch) but as apple trees are so common in nearly every garden most people with neighbours don't need to worry as the pollinators can fly quite far.

That most apple varieties that pollinate Folke also happen to be "classics" that are very common is just a plus :-)

Lastly, regarding delivery capabilities, as well as sale periods, I'd suggest you contact our customer service instead, as this forum focuses on gardening and plant advice. You can e-mail us at kundservice@plantagen.se for further information.

    Have a nice day! ☀

  • Great! One final question then, the pollinator varieties you mention are also climate zone 1-3. Are the species which are suitable for zones 4-5 as well, that also pollinate the Folke?

    Kind regards,
    Arthur

  • Some varieties can have slightly different zone hardiness depending on the rootstock, but there are of course different types that are more hardy.

Regarding which varieties that pollinate 'Folke', 'Fredrik' is one such variety that is also capable of handling zone 4.

I've also sorted the apple trees we have in our stores by zone, so if you click here then you will find all apple trees we currently have that can handle zone 4 or more :-)
